Proofreading
I will check your manuscript for typos, inconsistencies, errors in word usage, misplaced or missing punctuation, plus other details both mechanical and verbal.
Copyediting
Copyediting can range from light to heavy. Although copyediting does include the basics of proofreading, it also goes a step (or more) further. I will read your manuscript line by line and do the following:
- correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- query you when something isn’t clear or doesn’t seem to make sense
- flag or reword jargon
- create a style sheet to ensure consistency in grammar, spelling, number usage, hyphenation, and capitalization
- flag redundancies and suggest alternatives if necessary
- smooth out awkward or confusing sentences
- ensure that citations are correct and consistent
- fact-check when necessary
Americanization of manuscripts
I am a native English speaker (from California), but have been living in Europe for about twenty years. I speak Dutch fluently and have a good ear for languages in general. One of my specialties is editing manuscripts that have been translated into English. For translated manuscripts I perform all the normal copyediting duties plus ensure that the manuscript resonates correctly with Americans.
Most editing is done with Microsoft Word, using Track Changes so you can see everything I do. I can also work in PDF when necessary. If paper editing is required, I will use standard editing marks.
Rates
I usually charge a flat project fee after I see a sample of the manuscript and we discuss what level of copyediting is desired. That way you know the cost up front. However, for some projects it may make more sense to charge an hourly rate. We can talk about what makes the most sense for your project.
